Smooth ceiling finish after popcorn removal

Most people removing popcorn want a flat, smooth ceiling. Paint on bare drywall rarely gets you there. The seams and scrape marks have to be filled, and a thin coat of joint compound spread over the whole ceiling.

Why bare drywall doesn't look smooth

Popcorn texture hid a lot. Once it's gone you can see taped seams, screw and nail heads, scrape marks, and spots where the drywall's paper face tore. Light coming across the ceiling from a sliding door or a big window throws each of them into shadow.

What a skim coat involves

  1. Leftover texture is scraped and sanded off.
  2. Torn drywall paper is sealed so it doesn't bubble under new compound.
  3. Seams and fastener heads are re-taped or filled.
  4. A thin coat of joint compound goes over the entire ceiling, usually in more than one pass, with sanding in between.
  5. The ceiling gets a primer made for new joint compound, then ceiling paint.

The industry's finish standard from the Gypsum Association calls this Level 5: a skim coat over the entire surface. It recommends Level 5 where critical lighting conditions occur or where sheen or deep-toned paints are used. Level 4 skips the full skim coat and is meant for flat paint or light texture.

Smooth or textured?

A smooth finish takes more labor than a light texture because each flaw has to be fixed instead of hidden. If the drywall is in rough shape or the budget is tight, knockdown or orange peel hides more. The ceiling texture guide compares them.

What to ask for in the quote

Questions people ask

Can every ceiling be made smooth?

Most can. If the drywall was badly damaged during scraping, or the ceiling has sagged between joists, replacing or covering the drywall can cost less than skimming it flat.

Will a smooth ceiling show cracks later?

Hairline cracks along seams show more on a smooth ceiling than on a textured one. Good taping during the repair step is what prevents most of them.
