Source: Angi, Orlando popcorn ceiling removal cost data, updated February 24, 2026. Each row is Angi's $1.25 to $6 per square foot range applied to that area. The low end is a basic scrape; the high end includes repairs and a finished ceiling.
Ceiling area is close to floor area in most rooms. Measure the rooms you want done, or use the square footage of the house if you're doing all of it.
What raises the price?
- Painted popcorn, which takes longer to remove and leaves more patching. See painted popcorn removal.
- A smooth, skim-coated finish instead of a light texture. See smooth ceiling finish.
- Tall or vaulted ceilings. Angi puts scaffolding at $250 to $500.
- Disposal. Angi lists dumpster rental at $310 to $500 a week and junk removal at $75 to $800.
- Furnished rooms that have to be emptied and protected
- Asbestos, which moves the removal to a licensed abatement contractor
What does asbestos add?
Testing comes first. Angi's Tampa data puts an asbestos test at $200 to $300 and asbestos removal at $20 to $65 per square foot. Its Orlando page lists a combined $4 to $6 per square foot for testing and removal. The gap shows how much abatement prices vary with the size of the job and the containment needed, so treat any figure as a starting point until you have a written quote. See asbestos testing.
Hourly or by the square foot?
Angi says Orlando pros charge $15 to $60 an hour, but most quote by the square foot or by the room. A per-square-foot price makes quotes easier to compare, as long as each one says what finish it includes.
How to compare quotes
- Is asbestos testing included, or a separate step?
- Does the price include repairs, a skim coat or texture, primer and paint?
- Who hauls away the debris, and is a dumpster included?
- Is moving furniture and covering floors included?
- How many days, and which rooms will be out of use?
Do you need a permit?
Angi says removal itself likely doesn't need a permit in Orlando because it isn't structural. A dumpster on a public street, sidewalk or right-of-way may need one, which Angi puts at $30 to $50. If the texture tests positive and you plan to remove it yourself under Florida's owner exemption, you'll need a building permit that you apply for in person.

Questions people ask
Is it cheaper to remove popcorn myself?
Materials cost little, but the scraping is messy and the finish work takes skill. Test first. If the texture contains asbestos, Florida's owner exemption only applies to a home you live in that isn't for sale or lease, and you have to pull the permit yourself.
Why are the price ranges so wide?
A quick scrape with paint on bare drywall and a scrape followed by full repairs, a skim coat and two coats of paint are very different jobs. Ask every contractor to quote the same finish.
