Ceiling texture types: smooth, knockdown, orange peel and popcorn
When popcorn comes off, you pick what goes back: a smooth ceiling or a light texture. The choice affects the price, how much repair the drywall needs, and how easy the ceiling is to patch later.

Popcorn (acoustic)
A thick sprayed texture with a bumpy, cottage-cheese look. It hid drywall flaws and was quick to apply, which made it common for decades. It traps dust, is hard to patch to match, and in older homes may contain asbestos.
Smooth
A flat ceiling with no texture. Getting one after popcorn removal usually takes a skim coat over the whole ceiling, which the Gypsum Association calls a Level 5 finish and recommends where critical lighting conditions occur, such as light striking the ceiling at a low angle. It looks clean and modern and shows flaws the most. See smooth ceiling finish.
Knockdown
Compound sprayed in splatters and flattened with a knife while it sets, leaving a mottled pattern. It hides more than any other modern option and is the easiest to patch. See knockdown and orange peel.
Orange peel
A fine spray of thin compound left to dry as small bumps. It's subtle, hides minor flaws, and is common on walls, which makes it an easy match for a ceiling.
Which one to choose
| Texture | Look | Hides flaws | Patching later |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smooth | Flat, clean | Least | Hardest |
| Orange peel | Fine bumps | Some | Moderate |
| Knockdown | Flattened splatter | Most | Easiest |
| Popcorn | Heavy bumps | A lot | Hard to match |
- Choose smooth if you want the cleanest look and the drywall is in reasonable shape.
- Choose knockdown if the drywall was damaged during scraping or you want the lowest-maintenance texture.
- Choose orange peel to match textured walls with less visual pattern than knockdown.
Questions people ask
Which texture is cheapest after popcorn removal?
A light texture usually costs less than a smooth ceiling, because it needs less repair and no full skim coat. How rough the drywall is after scraping matters more than the texture itself. See what removal costs in Orlando.
