Painted popcorn ceiling removal in Orlando
Paint seals popcorn texture, so water can't soak in and soften it the way it does on an unpainted ceiling. Painted popcorn can still come down. It takes more time and sometimes a different method.

Signs your popcorn has been painted
- A slight sheen, or a color other than flat white
- A clean paint line where the ceiling meets the walls
- Water stains that were painted over at some point
- Earlier owners who repainted the whole house
A contractor confirms it with a small wet test. Have the texture tested for asbestos before that, or before anyone scrapes a test patch. See asbestos testing.
How painted popcorn comes off
Contractors use one or more of these approaches, depending on how thick the paint is and how well the texture is bonded:
- Scoring or sanding the paint so water can get through, then soaking and scraping
- A texture-removal product that softens the paint layer before scraping
- Dry scraping with a wide blade, which tends to gouge the drywall and means more patching
- Covering the ceiling with new drywall, when scraping would damage the old drywall too much
Each of these leaves more repair work than an unpainted ceiling. That's why most painted-popcorn jobs end with a skim coat or a knockdown texture rather than paint on bare drywall.
Lead paint in homes built before 1978
If the ceiling was painted before 1978, the paint may contain lead. Under the EPA's Renovation, Repair and Painting rule, contractors who disturb more than six square feet of lead paint in a pre-1978 home must be EPA Lead-Safe Certified and follow lead-safe work practices. If your house is that old, ask whether the contractor's firm is certified.
What painted popcorn removal costs
Angi's 2026 Orlando data puts popcorn ceiling removal at $889 to $2,770 for most jobs, or $1.25 to $6 per square foot. Painted texture takes more labor and leaves more patching, so expect a quote toward the upper part of that range. The Orlando cost guide lists the other things that move the price.
Questions people ask
Can popcorn be removed if it was painted more than once?
Usually. Each coat makes the texture harder to soften, so heavily painted ceilings take longer and more often end up skim coated or covered. Ask the contractor to test a small area before quoting a fixed price.
Is it cheaper to cover painted popcorn than to remove it?
Sometimes. Thin drywall over the old ceiling skips the scraping, but it means moving light fixtures, fans and vents and finishing a whole new surface. Get both prices. See remove, cover or paint.
