Pine Hills began in 1953, when its first subdivisions, Robinswood and Pine Ridge Estates, went up along the new Pine Hills Road north of Colonial Drive. It grew through the 1950s and 1960s as a bedroom community for Martin Marietta workers, then spread north toward Silver Star Road in the 1960s and 1970s.

Pine Hills is mostly unincorporated, but the City of Orlando annexed parts of it in the 1980s.
